Knee and Hip Replacement : Surgeons Sensitise On Treatment Options

The inaugural scientific day of the Cameroonian College of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeons, held on 6 September in Yaounde.

Information from the Cameroon College of Orthopaedist and Trauma Surgeons (CACOTS) reveals that osteoarthritis of the hip and knee is a prevalent condition, particularly among middle-aged and older individuals. However, due to limited awareness and resources, many patients have been unable to access treatment locally. It is within this backdrop that members of CACOTS are playing a vital role in promoting and developing orthopaedic and trauma surgery knowledge and practices in Cameroon.
On 6 September 2025, members of the Cameroon College of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeons (CACOTS) convened the organisation's inaugural scientific day in Yaounde, themed: "We are working to promote and develop the knowledge and practice of orthopaedic and trauma surgery in Cameroon." The event drew notable attendees, amongst whom Ndengho Maurine, Director of Social Protection for Persons with Disabilities and the Elderly, representing the Minister of Social Affairs. During the discussions, Ndengho Maurine underscored the government's dedication to protecting and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities. She commended the experts for hosting such a crucial forum and emphasised the necessity for enhanced measures to improve mobility and alleviate pain among persons with disabilities. 
Dr Alexandra Manga, Director General of the National Rehabilitation Centre for Persons with Disabilities, stated that the conference aimed to reduce patient suffering and government costs associated with medical evacuations.
