Pre-electoral Disputes, Constitutionality : Three Petitions Submitted

A public audience has been scheduled for Thursday September 4, at the Constitutional Council on the requests for the cancellation of some candidacies and challenging a legal disposition.
This Thursday September 4, 2025, the Constitutional Council will examine three petitions relating to requests for the cancellation of the candidacy of some Presidential candidates, revision of decision to reject Maurice Kamto’s candidacy and on the constitutionality of a legal disposition signed by the President of the Republic.
More specifically, Michel Noutchetchassi, a Cameroonian and a potential voter, who is praying the Court to revise its decision on the rejection of Maurice Kamto’s candidacy hinges on the fact that there was some degree of forgery on the part of the adversaries of the political leader. Recall that Maurice Kamto’s candidacy put forth by the MANIDEM was rejected by Elections Cameroon on grounds that multiple candidacies were filed by the same political party, with Dieudonné Yebga being another candidate. The decision was upheld by the Constitutional Council in its ruling of August 5, 2025. Citing paragraphs one, two and three of Article 135 of the Code on Criminal Procedure, he argues that the candidacy of Yebga (equally rejected by the Constitutional Council) was tainted with falsification and false documents, thus requesting that a thorough examination be conducted, possibly with the assistance of experts regarding documents that were presented by him at the hearing on August 4, 2025 at the Constitutional Council. He adds that Maurice Kamto submitted his candidacy papers for the October 12 Presidential election in strict compliance with the provisions of Article 121, 122 and 123 of the Electoral Code. To the petitioner, the file was rejected by the Electoral Board of ELECAM on the sole basis of double endorsement, and before the Court, Maurice Kamto's defence presented evidence that casts doubt on the candidacy of Yebga as fraudulent.
